Frayed Owner is the fourth book in Erin Flynn’s Morrigan University series.
The series follows Bevin, a young witch who escapes her abusive family, navigates her way through university, invents animal-friendly treats, rescues other victims of her society, and works hard to prevent other powerful families from controlling her.
Bevin’s family sacrifice their youngest child to give their power to the eldest child. This horrifying event was planned for Bevin; however, she has done her best to appear magicless. The intentional deceit does not prevent her family from abusing her both mentally and physically.
Once in university, she must confront the class hatred that allows students with powerful families to threaten and abuse lower-class students. She is also far behind other students her age, having never had the opportunity to learn magic properly.
Balancing university life and navigating the threats against her can be triggering. While she often feels overwhelmed, she has gathered people around her who provide needed support and guidance.
The books in this series have very dark components and are for mature audiences only. The storyline digs into raw wounds that may trigger some readers. In this book, we start to see Bevin given methods to aid her in controlling her emotions. Her vile father is no longer in control, her despicable brother is in custody, and her sister, a psychopath, is now head of the family.
This book is a fast-paced thriller set in a male-dominated world where magic is hidden from humans, and any paranormal being may appear. It is also a reverse harem romance. There is a nice mix of horror and humour with strong characters.
The series must be read in order. The endings leave you wanting the next release to find out what happens next. The books are around 300 pages long, which gives the author a chance to pad out the action, emotions, and scenery.
Goodreads has a review rating of 4.63, with 72% of readers giving it five stars.
The first book in the series is Escaped Daughter.
